The Canadian Pacific Railway’s water supply at Gimli was a standard 40,000-gallon (182,000 litres) enclosed tank erected in 1907 to supply steam locomotives. This enclosure was one of the means to keep the large cedar tub—constructed much like a barrel—warm during the bitter cold Manitoba winters. In addition, a coal-fired stove, whose chimney extended through the bottom of the tank to the roof, kept the water inside from freezing.
With the demise of steam motive power by more efficient diesel locomotives, this facility was closed and subsequently demolished. No vestige remains today.
