Historic Sites of Manitoba: Ste. Thérèse Roman Catholic Church (Cardinal, Municipality of Lorne)This impressive church, with its towering spire, was constructed between 1927 and 1929 in Cardinal, in the Municipality of Lorne. The church did not have a priest for several years until November 1935, when the first mass was said. Only three religious ceremonies other than mass were said in the church, two baptisms (in 1945 and 1949) and one marriage (in 1950). The church was closed in 1960. The church was designated as a municipal historic site on 28 December 1989. In the 1990s, the local community and la Société historique de Notre Dame de Lourdes undertook an ambitious restoration project, moving the building onto a new foundation and restoring exterior and interior woodwork. Continued renovations between 2003 and 2008 were done as part of the Manitoba Prairie Churches Project. Tours of the building are available during the summer.
