Historic Sites of Manitoba: Chamberlain Building / Bittner Block (1574 Logan Avenue, Winnipeg)

This two-storey, wood frame building on Logan Avenue in Winnipeg, measuring 20 feet by 58 feet, was designed and built in 1910 by owner William H. Chamberlain at a cost of about $2,000. Originally built as a one-storey structure, it was used as a neighbourhood hardware and mail express store with a residence in the rear.

Between 1913 and 1915, a second storey was added to the building by the construction firm of C. J. Johnson and Company at a cost of about $2,000. In 1930, it was converted into an apartment block by owner Alex Bittner at a cost of about $1,000. The block contained four apartments in its original configuration.

At the time of a 2022 site visit, the building was extensively modified from its original appearance.
