Memorable Manitobans: Henry Shaver Westbrook (1842-1913)Mayor of Winnipeg (1886). Born on his father’s farm at Oakland, Brant County, Canada West, he came to Winnipeg in the middle 1870s. He entered into partnership with Frank A. Fairchild in the implement and vehicle business. In the late 1870s and the1880s he was one of the well-known merchants in the city and took an interest in public affairs. He entered the Winnipeg mayoralty contest against E. R. Crowe, December 1885, and was elected Mayor after a most strenuous campaign. He served for one year. He retired from business and lived in Selkirk for many years. He died at Selkirk in October 1913, and was survived by two sons. He is commemorated by Westbrook Street in Winnipeg.
