Memorable Manitobans: Stella Elizabeth Kucherawy Locker (1933-2021)

Municipal official.

Born at Sifton on 10 July 1933, youngest daughter of Annie Lulashnyk (?-1971) and Mike Kucherawy (?-1957), she attended the St. Mary's Convent School. In 1954, she obtained a nursing degree at the Dauphin Hospital then began working at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Hospital in Flin Flon. In 1957, she married insurance broker Donald Arthur George “Don” Locker (1932-2001) and they had four children. The family moved to Thompson in 1963 and she joined the family insurance and realty business. She was a Thompson city councilor for 25 years (1989-2014) and President of the Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities (1992-1994). She established the Thompson Real Estate Board and Thompson Festival of Arts. She died at Thompson on 29 April 2021.
