This Winnipeg-based company was established in 1903 by William J. Bettingen with William C. Leistikow to operate grain elevators in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Known initially as the Imperial Elevator Company, it was renamed the Imperial Elevator and Lumber Company in October 1907. Edward James was the Assistant Manager and later the General Manager. In early 1918, the headquarters were moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan under General Manager Walter F. Thorn, becoming known as Imperial Lumber Yards.
